Unsatisfactory Academic Progress

Student visa holders studying in Australia must maintain satisfactory academic progress. If you have failed a course level in the English program four times, you are deemed to have unsatisfactory academic progress.

Under the Australian Government’s Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000, RMIT University Pathways (RMIT UP) is obliged to inform the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) if a student has not maintained satisfactory academic progress.

If you have been sent a notice of RMIT UP’s intention to report your unsatisfactory academic progress to DHA, you may appeal this decision if you can provide evidence of at least one of the following:

  • Significant relevant circumstances have not been considered in the decision
  • There was an error in process or breach of policy that had a significant impact on the decision
  • There is new, relevant evidence that was not available at the time of the decision, which would have had a significant impact on the decision

The Deputy Director, English (or delegate) will review your appeal within 10 business days. When the Deputy Director, English (or delegate) has made a decision, you will be sent an email with the outcome and the reasons for the decision.

If you choose to lodge an appeal, you should continue to attend your scheduled classes as normal.

If you have any questions about the appeal process, please contact pathways.compliance@rmit.edu.au

How to Lodge an Appeal
