RMIT English Worldwide offers a free placement test for students who do not have a valid Academic IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE result from the past 24 months.

The placement test results can be used to receive an offer to study English for Academic Purposes at RMIT English Worldwide (REW).

Test Time and Dates

The placement test is available:
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
  • 2:00 pm (Melbourne time) - please check the time difference here
  • The test takes approximately 90 minutes to complete

Test Structure

The RMIT English Worldwide Placement Test has 2 parts:
  1. Writing = 30 minutes
  2. Speaking = 10-15 minutes

Test Result

Results are valid for 6 months only. 
RMIT English Worldwide (REW) reserves the right to conduct a placement test on or before enrolment to confirm your English level.

The result of this test may affect your starting level and the number of weeks needed to achieve the level required for entry to your next RMIT program.

Test Booking

Once your booking request has been received, REW will send out a confirmation booking email. The test candidate will also receive login details and test instructions a minimum of 24 hours before the test.

All bookings must be made a minimum of 3 business days prior to the test in order to secure login details. All rescheduling requests or cancellations must be received a minimum of 24 hours prior to the test.

Please note that the REW Placement Test cannot be used to gain direct entry to RMIT University. It can be used to confirm a recommended starting level for a minimum 10 weeks of study at RMIT English Worldwide.

Test Booking

The RMIT English Worldwide Placement Test is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:00pm (Melbourne time).


Test Candidate Declaration

The test candidate must read and agree to the following:

Test Rules:
  • You must complete the test by yourself.
  • You must not have any person help you with the test.
  • You must not use the internet, books, dictionaries, or any other materials during the test.
  • If you have any help on the test, this is cheating and may affect your test results and placement at REW.
  • You must use a webcam at all time during the test.
  • You may be asked to do another test if REW believes that you have cheated during the test.
Test Date Requirements:
  • Laptop or Desktop computer (NOTE: Mobile phone and tablets cannot be used to complete the placement test.
  • Download the Zoom Client for Meetings app.
  • Passport - this must be viewed by the test invigilators.
  • Reliable internet connection - If possible, use a LAN/Ethernet cable or sit next to your WIFI router.
  • Headset
  • Microphone
  • Web camera

Results and Re-sits

Test Results

Test results will be sent via email within 2 business days of test completion. If you have already applied for an offer at RMIT, the results will also be available on the RMIT University Applicant Portal.

Re-sits

RMIT English Worldwide permits test candidates to re-sit after a minimum of 4 weeks. The maximum number of times a candidate can sit the placement test is 3 times per 12 months.

A re-sit could affect the recommended starting level and number of EAP weeks required.
